  • Ghana produces 8% of the world's cocoa. Kuapa Kokoo produces 1% of the world's cocoa.  Currently only 2-4% of this is sold at Fairtrade prices.
  • There are 11 million farmers in West Africa - the top cocoa producing area in the world.
  • Kuapa sold 1800 tonnes of its produce to the Fair Trade market last year. That represents just over 3%  of last year's produce.
  • he Fairtrade cocoa price is a minimum of $1600 per tonne + $150 social premium.
  • The problem with the world market price that most chocolate companies pay is that in addition to being low it fluctuates wildly from year to year. In 1998 it was $1236 per tonne, by 2000 it had almost halved to $672.

  • We eat about 10kg of chocolate per person in the UK every year, spending an average of £1.33 per week on our favourite treat.
  • The average UK family spends more on chocolate in a year than a cocoa farmer earns in a year
  • The UK chocolate market is worth around £3.16 billion. Just a small percentage of that would make an enormous difference to smallscale cocoa farmers in developing countries.
  • Chocolate starts to melt at 34C (93F), which is body temperature - that's why it melts in your mouth
