To help you deliver a creative poetry lesson we have put together a competition guide which provides ideas on how to respond to the theme.

Who can enter

The competition has three categories:

  • 7-11 year olds
  • 12-16 year olds
  • 17 years and over

Open to UK residents aged 7 years and over. No purchase necessary. All valid entries received by the closing date will be considered. Full terms and conditions.

Closing dates

The deadline for poems is 5th June 2020.

Prizes

A film of your poem being read by this year's guest judge, Onjali Raúf, winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2019.

Submit your poems

The deadline for poems in English is 5th June 2020.

The simplest way to submit your poems is by scanning them and uploading them online, along with an entry form. You can also send them by post to: Poetry Competition, Divine Chocolate, 4 Gainsford Street, London, SE1 2NE. Or you can email them to: tom@tradingvisions.org. Please do use our poem template if you can.

Poetry Competition 2020 Full Terms & Conditions

These Terms and Conditions prevail in the event of any conflict or inconsistency with any other communications, including advertising or promotional materials. Entry/claim instructions are deemed to form part of the Terms and Conditions and by participating all entrants will be deemed to have accepted and be bound by the terms and conditions. Please retain a copy for your information.

This competition is run by Trading Visions (16 Horselydown Lane, London SE1 2LN) on behalf of Divine Chocolate (4 Gainsford Street, London SE1 2NE) and Christian Aid (35-41 Lower Marsh, London SE1 7RL).

This promotion is open to United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) residents, and excludes employees and their immediate families of Divine Chocolate, Christian Aid, Trading Visions, its agents or anyone professionally connected to the promotion.

No purchase necessary.

Competition

Poems may be submitted by the individual entrant or by a teacher/parent/carer of a child on behalf of a child or school group. All entries must be accompanied by a complete individual or group entry form entries without this information will not be accepted.

Entrants are divided into three age groups (7­-11, 12-­16, 17­-Adult). All entrants must be at least seven years of age, there is no upper age limit.

Poems are non-returnable, and the promoters and judges are unable to offer feedback on individual poems aside from winning entries.

Once the winners are decided, Trading Visions will get in touch to obtain your permission before publicising the poems and authors. We publish winning poems on our websites and on YouTube, and publicise the poems in the media and on social media channels.

The prize for the competition comprises of book tokens and chocolate for the individual category winners and runners up. Prizes are decided and distributed at the sole discretion of the judges.

No cash alternative is available.

The competition will be judged by one representative each from Divine Chocolate and Christian Aid, and head judge and children’s author Onjali Rauf. Criteria for judging the poems include: 1) creative flair, 2) fit with the theme, and 3) understanding Divine Chocolate and Fairtrade.

One winning poem and one runner up poem will be selected in each category. The judges’ decision is final and no discussion will be entered into regarding the final selection.

Submissions for the competition must be received by post, submitted online, or sent via email before midnight on 5th June 2020. The promoters accept no liability for late, incomplete or missing entries.

Valid entries must be in English, legible, about the theme and must not mention any chocolate products unless they are Divine Chocolate.

Any included artwork will not be judged.

When you respond to us via email we will use your information to contact you once with the results of the competition. We will not contact you about anything else unless you have given us your explicit permission to do so. We will not give your data to any other organisation and will keep it secure.
